TOEFL for Australian immigration

Australia to accept TOEFLiBT and PTE for skilled migrant visa applications

The Australian immigration authorities have announced that TOEFLiBT (Test Of English as a Foreign Language) and PTE (Pearson test of English Academic) scores will be accepted as proof of English language proficiency for several categories of visa.

These new test options will come into effect from November 2014 for people applying under the skilled migrant category for immigration to Australia. The TOEFLiBT and PTE are the two latest English tests to be accepted by Australian immigration authorities alongside IELTS and OET which have mainly dominated in recent years.

IELTS (International English Language Testing System)
and OET (Occupational English Test) have been accepted for several years in the case of student visa applications. These test results will also be accepted for Skilled Work, Temporary Graduate and Holiday visa applications as from November 2014, as well as TOEFLiBT and PTE scores.

TOEFL and PTE extended to cover other visa areas

Other areas which will benefit from the changes are the Regional Sponsored Migration Scheme, Employer Nomination Scheme and Recognised Graduate visa categories. Applicants in these visa categories will be able to submit evidence of their English language competency using TOEFLiBT, PTE, IELTS or OET scores as part of their application.

Some experts in the field of education in Australia have welcomed this new move as they see it encouraging potential migrants to choose Australia as their preferred destination when considering which country to choose for international study programs.

The addition of TOEFLiBT and PTE scores by the Australian immigration authority as part of the visa application process will offer potential migrants an even better choice when it comes to selecting an English language proficiency test based on their level of competency.
