IELTS Essay | Travel and Learn about Culture

When it comes to gaining knowledge of other cultures it could be argued that both personal experience through travel and sources such as movies, TV documentaries and the Internet provide information regarding different cultures. Personally, I agree that it is possible to learn about other cultures without actually travelling to other places.

However, there is a distinct difference between simply learning about a culture from external sources and actually experiencing it and eventually understanding the various aspects of it, something which can only be done through the experience of living or being part of a culture for an extended time. Only through living through certain experiences is it possible to fully understand the people and how they and their culture have evolved over time.

Moreover, there is no substitute for actually living and being part of a different culture form your own. It could be compared to reading a manual about how to drive a car and knowing all the technicalities of ‘how to’ but without ever having the experience of driving a car – it is simply not the same. One is pure knowledge based on information which has been read, while the other is knowledge plus the addition of personal experience which provides an additional dimension and an even deeper understanding of the acquired knowledge.

Therefore, while it is possible to learn many things regarding various cultures simply by reading and doing research online, without ever visiting the country and people, actually travelling and visiting other places and spending time in the environment and with the people provides a much deeper and holistic understanding of other cultures than simple information sources can ever provide.
