What is the IELTS Life Skills test?

The IELTS Life Skills test is an English Language proficiency test administered by Cambridge English Language Assessment, IDP: IELTS Australia and the British Council. The IELTS Life Skills test evaluates your Speaking and Listening skills, and the there are two different tests based on CEFR levels: Level A1 and Level B1. The IELTS Life Skills test is intended to comply with the UK Visa & Immigration requirements for particular categories of visa and reasons for immigration to the UK.

You can do the IELTS Life Skills test at various UK Visas & Immigration approved test centers across the world.

When can I do the IELTS Life Skills Test?

There are regular and frequent test sessions scheduled at approved test centers. You can check an up to date list of IELTS Life Skills test locations and dates. Registration for the IELTS Life Skills test will be active from April 2015.

What is the structure of IELTS Life Skills?

The IELTS Life Skills test is performed with one examiner and two candidates in each session. Your English language speaking and listening skills are assessed in the same test session.

Does IELTS Life Skills only evaluate Speaking and Listening?

Yes, the design of the new IELTS test has been specially constructed to comply with certain immigration requirements for candidates who are simply required to validate their English listening and speaking skills at either A1 or B1 level.

How long is the IELTS Life Skills test?

There are two different IELTS Life Skills tests according to the CEFR: IELTS Life Skills at A1 level is 16-18 minutes long and at B1 level it is 22 minutes long.

Are IELTS Life Skills Speaking and Listening tests separate?

No, they are not, your English language speaking and listening skills are both assessed during the same session.

How is the IELTS Life Skills test evaluated?

Assessment is done by an approved IELTS examiner who evaluates your English speaking and listening skills during the test. Below are the criteria for assessment:

  • conveying information
  • speaking to communicate
  • obtaining information
  • engaging in discussion

Although there are two candidates in each IELTS Life Skills test session, your own evaluation is not affected by the performance of the other test candidate.

What kind of test certificate will I receive?

You will be issued with an IELTS Life Skills Test Report Form (one copy).

How soon will I receive my IELTS Life Skills results?

You will usually receive your IELTS Life Skills test results 7 days (or possibly earlier) after you take the test.

How soon can I register for an IELTS Life Skills test?

Normally you will be able to find an IELTS Life Skills test date within 28 days from when you decide to reserve your place for the test.

Can I re-take the IELTS Life Skills test?

Once you have taken and passed the test, you must wait two years before attempting to take it again unless you take it at a different level from your original test. However, if you do not manage to pass the IELTS Life Skills test the first time you take it, you can retake it again as many times as you wish until you pass.
