Some people say that nowadays children have too much freedom - What is your opinion?

People continue to debate this controversial topic. Some people believe that children have too much freedom and are spoiled, while others think children need protection from the world until they are old enough to understand it properly. Both of these arguments have some merit, but ultimately there needs to be a balance between the two views. This essay explores what freedoms children need to become productive members of society and how their parents can help them develop into responsible adults without spoiling them or sheltering them from reality.

Firstly, children need to learn to make their own decisions and experience the consequences of those choices. If they are not allowed any freedom, then how can they know what is right or wrong? It is only by experiencing both good and bad things that children develop morals and values for themselves. Parents who shelter their children too much also do a disservice because it prevents children from learning these lessons through personal experience.

Secondly, parents should limit freedoms gradually as children get older so that their transition into adulthood goes smoothly without much trauma or upset. They should begin with allowing young kids to choose between items at the grocery. Doing so encourages kids to develop decision-making skills and helps them understand how to react when they cannot have everything they want.

Another way for parents to gradually allow children more freedom is by allowing them certain times when they can choose what activities they do, as long as it does not interfere with school or family obligations. Choosing their activities teaches responsibility because if something comes up at home, the child will already know her schedule and won't be confused about why she has to leave in the middle of playing basketball with friends or having a play date.

Finally, ignoring the effects of social media and technology on today's youth is dangerous. Social media exposes children to so much more than they were ten, fifteen, or twenty years ago. With the click of a button, children can access content that may be inappropriate for their age level and get in touch with potentially dangerous strangers. Parents need to exercise strict control and curb children's freedom to use social media without supervision.

Overall, kids enjoy more freedom today than in the past. However, how much is too much? It is the question that each parent must find the answer to based on their beliefs and desire to see their kids develop into responsible adults.

Here is an example of an IELTS writing test topic and sample answer. This is a Task 2 essay question from a recent IELTS exam in the UK.

Some people think that nowadays children have too much freedom. Do you agree or disagree

Some people may think that the amount of freedom given to children is more extensive than previous generations enjoyed. However, it does not mean it is excessive or in any way detrimental. It is common for older generations to compare their childhood with the experience of children growing up today.

While it is natural that some people may consider that children these days enjoy a more liberal and free childhood than children in the past, it occurs in the context of a world which has indeed changed much in the last few decades. The explosion of technology, the concept of globalization, and disruptive social changes have resulted in new behaviors and attitudes towards many things. It is not only children but also today's adults that live in ways unheard of by the previous generation.

On the other hand, it seems that each generation of children benefits from more freedom and growing up quicker than their parents did. The result is more liberal, mature, and adventurous adults, who affect society in the long run. One can argue that society has progressed more rapidly because of this shedding of many traditional ways of doing things and becoming a freer and more open society.

I believe that children do not have too much freedom. In fact, the so-called freedom they now enjoy is probably directly relative to the greater freedom which adults also enjoy. It is not a case of only children benefiting from this change but also adults and society in general.
