IELTS Graph | Describe Information in a Graph | Sample Task 1 Answer

The graph shows information regarding the transportation of goods in the UK during the period 1974-2002 by four different means: road, rail, water and pipeline. It can be seen that road transportation accounted for the highest volume of goods that were transported while transportation by pipeline accounted for the least volume of goods transported.

Some interesting observations can be made: road, water and pipeline transportation all clearly increased overall from 1974 to 2002. However, rail transport represented almost the same volume of goods being transported in 2002 as in 1974 with only a minimal increase by the end of the period, though the volume actually decreased between 1978 and 1998.

Water transportation was used more than rail by the end of 2002 in contrast to 1974 when it was used less. Meanwhile road transport experienced the highest overall growth in volume, increasing from 70 million tonnes in 1974 to almost 100 million tonnes by the end of the 28 year period.
