Sample answer for IELTS Essay (Task 2) questionSalary and working conditions are probably the two factors which have an immediate and continuous impact on employees and are therefore considered key for many people when deciding whether or not to accept an offer of employment.
While a high salary may appear attractive, it should be taken into account what is required from the employee in order to warrant such a level of remuneration. Highly paid positions usually require an applicant to possess expertise and specialist skills as well as the requisite qualifications and may also include a greater degree of responsibility in terms of managing staff or commitment to the company in terms of time spent at work, potentially leading to greater stress. However, being well remunerated for working can allow an employee to enjoy many other things in life which a lesser paid position would not permit, such as purchasing a larger home, car, or financing education for their children, to mention a few examples.
However, nowadays many people consider the quality of the time they spend at work and the general environment of the workplace as impacting them more than simply the level of salary offered for a particular position. The atmosphere at work in terms of potential stress levels experienced, working with other employees, the attitude of management and general corporate culture can all affect an employee’s health and general wellbeing over time. In some cases, a person may place higher value on a working environment where they feel that they will be working in a friendly, supportive and positive work environment than simply the level of salary offered. This can serve to be a deciding factor in choosing to accept a position as opposed to an alternative which pays better but offers less desirable working conditions.
Personally, I believe that it is possible to strike a balance in most cases and find a position which not only pays well in order to take care of financial security but also provides a positive working environment where it is possible to grow and develop professionally. However, clearly each individual will no doubt accept or decline any offer of employment based on their own priorities and personal circumstances at the time.
