Sample Answer

While television may appear to provide various benefits, it also has certain drawbacks associated with it. When considered holistically, it leads me to disagree with the simplistic statement that television is a good thing. Here are a few examples of why it could be considered not a good thing.

Television can only be described as entertaining and informing if a big assumption is made about what people actually watch on TV. For example, if a person only watches reality TV shows and light entertainment, there is little educational value in watching television. The same could be said of a person who only watches sport on TV. Apart from the news of the final result – there is little informative purpose attached to the programming, it is simply entertainment, something which is available in many different forms.

Concerning television news, this is largely governed by one or two influential parties in most countries. This can lead to bias in terms of news coverage and other programming issues. While watching news programmes may require less effort than reading a newspaper, TV news can, in many cases, be misleading, biased or provide a less than complete picture of a particular situation or event. In some cases, it may present nothing of substance at all for the viewer.

A case in point would be many of the so-called discussions presented on current affairs news programmes, in which two or more experts are invited to the studio in order to discuss a newsworthy topic, only to degenerate into an argument between two opposing points of view, which in the end leaves the viewer no wiser or better informed than before watching the programme. This format has become far more common since the advent of twenty-four-hour news coverage in which it is common to provide analysis and comment even before fully understanding a situation based on the pressure of filling minutes on air with ‘news’.

In addition, there is the generally negative aspect of television’s passive nature and how it affects people who spend a considerable number of hours ‘parked’ in front of it. It requires little mental activity to watch TV, and even less physical effort and while many people might regard it as relaxing, it can lead to listlessness, apathy and generally poor health.

Overall, entertainment can be found in many other sources, and likewise news can be obtained from newspapers, the internet and radio. The fact that television can simply fulfil two different functions is not sufficient to consider it a good thing, as much of its positive value depends on what viewers consume in terms of programming.

  • Watching Television is Bad for Children. Do You Agree or Disagree?

I agree. Some people say that watching TV is bad for children because they're left with only images and sounds from TV as input, which may not be able to support the growth of a healthy brain.

Others argue that studies show that moderate use does not pose detrimental effects on a child's intellectual or social development, just like exposure to various kinds of art such as painting.

This statement is corroborated by multiple sources concerning post-natal development where evidence for negative effects related to media use exists, but no causal relationship has been found.

However, you cannot ignore the influence that watching TV has on kids through advertising, especially when commercials encourage them and make them want things they don't need or can't have.

What Are The Advantages and Disadvantages of Watching TV for Children?

The most important thing is that it's a parent's best shot at getting some time to do things around the house, go for a walk, take care of things, etc.

Studies have shown that watching TV later in childhood can be associated with an increase in risk-taking behavior. What this means is there is a very real chance that kids will mimic what they see on-screen and may even become addicted to the screen.

Some kids are simply stuck inside with no other interesting forms of entertainment available. Various studies show how damaging addictive behaviors can be - not just gambling or - not just gambling or drinking but also bingeing on something like junk food which can lead to obesity over time.

A kid who spends their entire day sitting for hours watching TV may be less likely to develop social skills.

Research has shown that watching television is bad for children. Children who watch a lot of television have more difficulty with interpersonal relationships, reading comprehension and are more prone to being overweight.

There is also the issue of safety - watching too much TV can turn an otherwise outgoing kid into one who spends all their time in front of the screen playing games.
