Are interviews a good way of selecting competent candidates for a job? IELTS Essay Question & Answer
IELTS Essay | Selecting competent candidates for a jobThe process of recruiting a new employee to fill a vacant position within a company or organization is sometimes complex and varies greatly depending on the actual position to be filled. Traditionally, face-to-face job interviews have been the cornerstone of any job application process; however, there are other methods which can help in determining the suitability of a candidate for a particular position.
One such method is psychometric testing, which is very popular for many executive-level positions. This method probes more deeply into the qualities and personality of a candidate and can be adjusted in line with a particular position in order to directly test a candidate’s strengths, weaknesses and level of compatibility in relation to the profile of the vacancy.
Another popular method used is that of competency testing, which in some cases can involve various candidates working together on tasks in order for recruiters to observe them in action and take note of salient behavior or traits displayed by candidates, as well as their problem solving skills, leadership ability and the individual dynamics of candidates within the group.
Personally, I believe that the profile of the position which is to be filled determines the process of recruitment and selection which is adopted by a company. Clearly, lower-level positions may only require basic skills testing and a brief interview, whereas a senior-level position will usually require more extensive and in-depth analysis of candidates and probably use a combination of selection methods in order to fully scrutinize the candidate’s suitability and potential performance in the position in question.
