IELTS WRITING TASK 1 Answer

Reasons Why UK Residents Travel Abroad

From the bar chart it can be seen that the main reason for travel abroad by UK residents over the period in question was to visit friends and relatives, while business travel accounted for the lowest proportion of UK residents traveling overseas.

From 2009 to 2013 the largest change in terms of the motive for travel was related to people traveling abroad on holiday, experiencing a consistent and considerable increase from 8,000 in 2009 to 14,000 in 2013. Over the same period, business travel remained relatively unchanged, registering only a minimal increase.

With regard to the number of days spent broad by UK travelers, in 2009 the average number of nights spent abroad was approximately 14, which increased to around 22 nights in 2010, before falling to 10 nights in 2011. The following year (2012) saw a return to almost the same level as in 2010, and by 2013 the average number of nights had risen to 24 nights; an additional 10 nights more than in 2009.

The overall trend shown indicates that UK travelers were, on average, staying abroad longer when they traveled and were traveling abroad on holiday in greater numbers.
