Why do people take part in dangerous sports?

In recent years, there has been a considerable increase in the popularity of risky or ‘extreme sports’ despite the inherent danger involved. This essay will examine some of the main reasons why people like to participate in such activities and discuss ways to reduce the risks involved.

One of the main reasons why some people are attracted to dangerous sports is that they get an adrenalin buzz from them. These people simply like taking risks – they get high on it. They love challenging their abilities and pushing themselves to the limit. A deep sense of satisfaction, having faced a potentially dangerous situation; for example, while bungee jumping, rock climbing, or abseiling and accomplishing it, is often the reward for them.

Another reason for pursuing such sports is the fame and financial reward available to the top participants in many cases. They make the headlines on the Internet and TV news and may even receive celebrity status. With fame comes fortune - they may be offered a lot of money from sports goods manufacturers, for example, who hire them for product endorsements. They may also build a long-term career associated with their particular sport; through merchandising, videos, commentary, web pages, product development, and other commercial activities – all based on their skill, experience, and ability to attract fans and potential customers.

As for how to deal with the potential risks involved in these extreme sports, organizers can take several measures to reduce all controllable risks. The most obvious is to ensure that these sports are carried out under the correct supervision by experienced and qualified personnel in a well-suited environment. All possible safety precautions should be in place whenever necessary to guarantee the safety of both participants and spectators.

Companies sponsoring or organizing such sporting events, normally manufacturers of related sports equipment, could develop and promote a ‘best practice’ policy for each activity related to the safety of the participants. This policy could well include accredited training of instructors and support personnel involved.

The very essence of the attraction of these sports is the element of danger that exists in them. While the organizers could do many things to reduce some of the risks involved, it is unlikely that all risks could be eliminated.
