Essay on Obesity

Nowadays, more people are becoming seriously overweight or obese. Some people say that the solution to this problem is to increase the price of fattening foods as a deterrent.

To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Causes and Effects of Obesity Essay

Notes/main points to consider:
  • Is fattening food the main cause of obesity?
  • Is lack of exercise a cause of obesity?
  • How price sensitive are consumers of junk food or fast food?
  • Would consumers simply choose to buy fattening food in supermarkets rather than in fast food outlets?
  • Who would decide which foods are fattening? The government? Another agency?
  • Who would implement the price increase? The government? The food manufacturers?
  • Would it be a tax on top of the retail price, like for cigarettes and alcohol?
  • Cigarettes and alcohol have high taxes because they are bad for health.
  • No evidence to support this idea: the price of cigarettes and alcohol has continually increased, and people still smoke and drink.
  • Is price the real concern for consumers? Cooking food at home is cheaper – but people choose fast food because of the convenience factor.

Causes of Obesity Essay

Obesity has been in the headlines on a worldwide scale, highlighting the dangers and the costs to society in terms of the impact on health and treatment. One of the main causes cited is poor diet choices by consumers who opt for highly-processed and fatty food options which have low nutritional content and can lead to obesity. One suggested remedy is to increase the price of such food, in the hope that it will dissuade consumers from buying it. However, this solution is not as straightforward as it may seem at first glance.

Firstly, food choices are only one of the possible reasons for the rise in obesity across the world. People generally lead more sedentary lives nowadays, meaning that a lack of exercise could also be responsible for many people increasing their body weight. Nonetheless, the fact that obesity is now a global problem suggests that the globalized food market and spread of highly processed junk food to most countries do play a major role in the recent rise in worldwide obesity.

Secondly, there is no evidence to suggest that simply increasing the price of such food would deter people from buying it. The long-standing battle to try and persuade people to stop smoking through decades of educational campaigns and high taxes has not produced satisfactory results, with many more young people smoking now than ever before. There is also the question of price sensitivity. If people who buy fattening food were seriously worried about the price, they would cook their meals at home, as this is the cheapest option.

It is, therefore, essential to consider other motivating factors behind the purchase of such food, for example, the convenience factor. Many people are so busy these days that they find it extremely convenient to buy fast food and eat food that is pre-cooked and delivered or simply heat it up at home.

Finally, there is the question of practicality. Who would decide which foods are fattening? And would it be manufacturers who increase their prices or the government who impose an additional tax, as in the case of cigarettes? Food manufacturers have little motivation to increase prices voluntarily, as it might adversely affect the sale of their products.

If the government intervenes by imposing a tax on such products, it establishes a potentially dangerous precedent; one of discriminating against certain consumers regarding their choice of food products. This is unlike the case of cigarettes and alcohol which are optional purchases for people; however, food is a basic human necessity, and therefore cannot be treated in the same manner.

Overall, a more effective and long-term solution might be to impose an additional premium cost for healthcare for those diagnosed as being obese, as is already the case for people who are smokers. In this way, those who so not eat healthy will eventually have to foot the bill for their poor physical health, with no need to involve food manufacturers at all.
