- conservation
Environmental problems & Solutions
Talking points
There's too much waste in our society today. One way we can help reduce this waste is by recycling more materials.
Recycling items, especially waste helps not only with reducing pollution but also conserving natural resources.
Another form of recycling that many people don't know about is upcycling, which means taking old items and turning them into new ones (like turning a CD case into a wallet).
When buying goods, we can ask the staff where they are made. If you're buying food, make sure to buy items that come from sustainable farming and fishing practices.
Many people don't know about some of these practices because it's difficult to find out what is happening in their supply chains. This means many companies keep all information.
People need to be aware of how much ytheir car or public transport is costing the environment in terms of pollution and energy consumption.
We all consume energy every day, but there are things we can do to reduce our energy consumption. For example, the first step is for everyone to switch from using energy sources that emit carbon dioxide, such as coal-burning power plants or diesel vehicles.
It's important not only to stop using these polluting energy sources but also to adopt new energy sources such as solar power in our homes. Energy consumption is a major contributor to global warming. Greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide, methane and nitrous oxide are all released by human activities through energy use and transportation. And they contribute to the greenhouse effect.
Environmental Impact Assessment
All the above impact our planet in many ways including:
- changing air temperature patterns
- melting ice caps on glaciers around the world
- destroying natural habitats
Environmental issues and recycling are both important topics for any country, so it is a good idea to keep them in mind when you're completing your IELTS speaking prep.
One topic that often comes up in the exam - environmental impact - can be discussed without mentioning specific countries or cities, which means this will come up again in another test soon.
5 Major Environmental Impacts
There are 5 main envrionemttal impacts that result from the degradation and misuse of natural resources. These impacts are climate change, pollution, biodiversity loss, soil erosion, and freshwater withdrawals.
1 - Climate change: Deforestation has been decreasing the Earth's capacity to store carbon dioxide in trees and plants, which means more of it ends up in the atmosphere exacerbating the problem.
2 - Water Pollution: The impact is water pollution with chemicals (such as fertilizer or pesticides) running into waterways. Once there, they can kill sea life and make people sick when they come into contact with contaminated wells for drinking purposes.
3 - Loss of Biodiversity: The third impact is loss of biodiversity, where we see animal habitats being destroyed, leading to the extinction of those species (or a population reduction).
4 - Soil Erosion: There are considerable impacts of soil erosion. The ever-increasing amounts of topsoil blown away, or lost by water inflow to lakes and rivers, can result in lower levels (i.e., thinning) of topsoil for agricultural uses due to additional heavy rainfall or violent winds.
For example, more than half the serious dust storms in this country originate out on the eroded lands west of our mountain ranges.
5 - Freshwater Withdrawals: We understood relatively little about water supply problems concerning irrigation withdrawals in the U.S. before 1930. But it has become one of the most critical problems confronting U.S. industry and agriculture for major areas east of the Rocky Mountains where only saline water exists.
