  • Argument Essay - Job Satisfaction

As most people spend a major part of their adult life at work, job satisfaction is an important element of individual wellbeing.

What factors contribute to job satisfaction? How realistic is the expectation of job satisfaction for all workers?

What are the main factors of job satisfaction?

Usually, there are two main factors in job satisfaction: A sense of accomplishment and a feeling of participation.

A sense of accomplishment = The employee gets to meet certain obligations or goals and feels like they're doing something correctly (even if the worker is told that their efforts are not as good as they should be).

A feeling of participation = there's an environment that provides involvement across all levels where decisions are made collectively. One person can't do it on their own, and this promotes collaboration.

Some also believe job satisfaction has to do with being paid well for what you do and receiving other perks like a free lunch or gym membership (called "benefits").

Is it realistic for most workers to expect to be satisfied at work?

The expectation of job satisfaction is not realistic, as long as jobs exist which do not align with the most fulfilling aspect of your personality.

The solution to this problem would be to find employment that fits both your skillset and who you are on a deeper level.

Further work will need to be done to increase the overall consciousness about job fulfillment, so people can break out of their chains once they realize there could be something better.

The first step is acknowledging our emotional self and calling out what unfulfilling aspects of our lives we want to amend or overhaul. There's power in knowing oneself well enough before making changes for everyone else.

Many people live physically fulfilled lives but have little direction or stability emotionally; this can lead to dissatisfaction at work.

    Job Satisfaction & Wellbeing

There is no doubt that it is beneficial for people to feel content and satisfied with their job and the environment in which they work. Satisfaction at work can contribute a lot to a person’s general state of health and affect their social and family life either positively or negatively, so it is an important lifestyle factor.

What constitutes job satisfaction exactly? There are documented theories on this subject that deal with different levels of needs, from security to social acceptance, motivation, and opportunities for advancement and development. Ultimately, the level of satisfaction a person can feel in a particular job might be affected by a multitude of factors.

It is not uncommon for a person to like their job but at the same time be unhappy due to personal conflict in the workplace or problems with their boss. Equally, it is common for people to cite their social relationships in the workplace as important in their life while the actual job may offer less satisfaction.

Most people would agree that working in a job where they feel secure, valuable, respected, well treated, and offered opportunities to grow and develop as employees would lead to a reasonable level of job satisfaction.

People will experience varying degrees of satisfaction with their jobs, depending on the nature of their work. It may not be possible for an employee involved in highly repetitive manual labor to feel the same level of satisfaction as a highly-skilled employee who works in a creative environment. However, it is not unrealistic to expect all workers to experience an ‘acceptable level of job satisfaction in most cases.
