IELTS Writing Task 1 Rubric

  • 4 Criteria
  • Band score 9
  • Overall comments

The IELTS writing rubric for Task 1 is made up of four criteria:

  • Task Achievement
  • Coherence and Cohesion
  • Lexical Resource
  • Grammatical Range and Accuracy

Each criterion is given a band score from 0-9. The overall band score is then calculated by taking the mean of the four criterion scores.

Band score 9 is given to writing which is "almost entirely error-free".

The key characteristics of writing at this level are that it is well-organized and well-developed, with a good range of vocabulary and grammatical structures.

There may be a few very minor errors, but they do not impede understanding.

Writing at band score 9 level is rare. If you are able to write at this level, congratulations! You are on your way to becoming a proficient writer in English.
