How to Write A Letter To the Headmaster of Your Son's School

How to write a letter to the headmaster

Here is a sample answer for this IELTS Writing Task 1 (General Training) question.

The writig task is about writing a letter to the headmaster at the school your son attends to explain why he will be absent from class.

Dear Sir/Madam,

I am writing to inform you that my son Peter will not be able to attend school on Thursday 23 February due to a special family celebration that he will be attending on that particular day.

The occasion is to celebrate his grandmother’s 100th birthday and to be honest it may be her last birthday with us as she has been seriously ill recently. I am sure you can understand the importance, both for Peter and his grandmother, that all family members are there on the day to help her celebrate such an event.

I would like to ask if Peter’s teachers would be able to inform me of the material which would be covered in classes on that day so that he might review the necessary topics to avoid falling behind in his classwork.

Once again, I trust you understand the importance of this event for the whole family and will understand Peter’s absence from his classes on that day.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Yours faithfully,

[Your name]
