IELTS Writing Task 2
Is this a positive or a negative development?
IELTS Writing Task 2 Essay
The need to constantly update skills and in some cases retrain for a career change has become more common nowadays. In part, this is due to the free movement of the world’s population and increasingly dynamic work relationships between employers and employees or contractors. It cannot simply be classed as something positive or negative. It is a direct result of the globalization of labor markets and the evolving global culture that is no longer country or region-specific.
In recent years, the advent of many new types of work that involve thinking and creative skills and technology has opened the doors to a tsunami of change, not only in the way that people work but also from where. Many jobs can now be performed by people who live in other countries, and many more jobs are performed by mobile workers who no longer have physical ties to an office or factory. General mobility associated with the world of work naturally has consequences that we can now begin to appreciate.
For example, a computer programmer who wishes to live in another country other than their own can now move freely without the absolute necessity to obtain work within the country where they live. With such a mobile workforce, the possibility of being a resident of various countries during a lifetime is much greater, especially in regions such as Europe, where there is free movement between residents of member countries.
As a result, the fast-paced change of technology-based work has already established an alternative culture to the traditional job-for-life expectation that was normal only a generation ago. Nowadays, people can expect to work for several different companies in various fields throughout their working life. We have already seen the demise of many traditional jobs, and it is likely some current jobs will no longer exist in the next few decades.
These changes or developments in the way we work and live are neither positive nor negative developments. They simply reflect progress, and the critical thing to consider is that there will very likely be further changes that impact the world population as we come together even more with a common culture and new work practices in the future.
