Steel Production, Demand, and Employment in a UK Steel Company
The line graphs depict steel production, demand, and worker numbers within a UK Company producing steel for the year 2010.
Steel production fluctuated throughout 2010, with a peak in February (5 million tonnes) followed by a significant dip in May (1.5 million tonnes). Production then gradually recovered, reaching close to its starting point by December (2.1 million tonnes). Demand for steel remained relatively stable throughout the year, ranging from 2.3 million tonnes in December to 4.5 million tonnes in March. Notably, demand consistently outpaced production from March to December.
The number of workers employed in the steel industry exhibited a clear downward trend throughout 2010. Starting at 5,000 employees in January, the workforce dipped to a low of 200 by December, representing a significant reduction. The most substantial decline occurred between June (2,000 employees) and July (1,000 employees). There was a small uptick until September (1,750 employees) before the downward trend resumed.
Overall, steel production levels generally did not meet steel demand, with a notable gap emerging between April and August. The decline in the workforce coincided with the period of lower steel production, suggesting a possible link between these trends.
