Problem Solution Essay - Are Violent Video Games & TV Harmful?

Essay on Violence - Are violent video games and TV harmful to children?

Essay question:

Most parents are not happy about children playing violent video games and watching violence on television.
Is watching too much violence harmful to children? What can parents do to solve this problem?

Essay Answer

As a parent, it's only natural to want to protect your children from harm. But when it comes to violence in video games and on television, you may not be sure what's best for them.

It's no secret that children are exposed to a lot of violence through the media they consume, whether through video games, movies, or even the news. It's impossible to completely shield children from all forms of violence, so parents must be aware of the potential effects it can have on their young minds.

Some studies have shown that exposure to violence can lead to desensitization and aggression in children. However, other studies have found that children who watch violent media are no more likely to be violent themselves.

On the one hand, parents don't want their children exposed to something that could potentially be damaging. On the other hand, parents don't want to shelter their children from the realities of the world. So, what's the best solution? It's vital to have open conversations with children about what they're seeing and help them to understand that not all forms of violence are acceptable. By doing so, parents can help mitigate some of the negative effects of any violence in the media.

A realistic solution is probably somewhere in the middle. Allow children to watch age-appropriate content, but make sure to monitor it closely. And if you're ever concerned about something they're seeing or playing, don't hesitate to talk to them about it. Help them understand why violence is never the answer, and give them the tools they need to deal with difficult situations in a healthy way.

Parents concerned about their children being exposed to too much violence can do a few things. One is to limit the amount of time their children spend consuming media. Another is to make sure that children consume media from various sources, not just ones that focus on violence. Finally, they can talk to their children about what they're seeing and help them to understand the difference between fantasy and reality. These steps allow parents to help ensure that their children are not unduly influenced by violence in video games or television programs.
