Pollution Essay Sample Answer

Here is an example essay answer to the question about industrial pollution and if taxing offenders would help reduce it.

Industrial pollution is one of the most significant environmental problems facing the world today. The burning of fossil fuels, such as coal and oil, releases harmful chemicals into the atmosphere, causing air pollution. This pollution is a major contributing factor to global warming, which is having devastating effects on our planet.

While industries in some parts of the world are producing more pollution than before, in other parts of the world we are seeing a reduction in the amount of industrial pollution caused. This is in part due to stringent environmental policies as well as financial incentives to avoid excessive pollution, and also the result of cleaner manufacturing technology and processes.

Simply taxing offending companies or organizations may seem the easiest and most direct method of controlling the problem. However, it is not the only action that can help achieve a reduction in the overall amount of pollution created by industry on a worldwide scale. So what other solutions are viable? Below are some key methods that have been or could be used to great effect.

Technology offers many potential solutions for cleaner industrial processes. This can be seen in the waste management sector concerning landfill sites, and in many manufacturing sectors which now utilize cleaner methods than a few decades ago. Such changes coupled with additional treatment of potentially hazardous pollution have already helped industrial pollution to be reduced in some countries.

Other ways technology will help to reduce industrial pollution include reducing energy consumption and switching to renewable energy sources, improving emission control technologies, improving process and product design to reduce or eliminate waste, using cleaner raw materials, and recycling and reuse of materials.

Also, the disappearance of certain older industries in some countries, such as coal mining, along with cleaner energy generation using nuclear power or alternative energy sources such as solar, wind, and tidal have helped in reducing industrial pollution. Such developments will certainly continue to produce cleaner and more environmentally safer options in the future.

I consider it important for governments and industry to work together to develop clean energy, industry, and commerce which is sustainable and to ensure that any associated pollution is kept to a minimum. Certainly, taxing offenders is necessary as a penalty, but it is by no means the only strategy that needs to be employed to help keep pollution worldwide under control.

How would you answer this Pollution Essay writing task?

  • What is the biggest source of pollution in your country?
  • What are some solutions to combat pollution?
  • Should the government or companies solve pollution problems?

Sample Essay Answer (2)

Pollution, in general, is a big problem, but industrial pollution accounts for the majority of pollution caused worldwide. It is therefore essential to seek methods to reduce it to more sustainable levels.

In many countries, governments implement restrictive taxation regulations. This is done in an attempt to encourage industries to consider less polluting methods of conducting their operations. This, however, does not tackle the essence of the problem. It simply makes the products produced more expensive for the consumer because most manufacturers pass on any increased costs to the end user, the consumer.

However, the driver of all industrial production is consumer demand. Therefore, if methods can be implemented to reduce demand, industrial pollution will, as a consequence, also reduce. Such a plan would require populations worldwide to change their consumption habits; consuming less than they currently do to reduce the supply of products by industries.

Technology can also help in reducing pollution because it can lead to more efficient and cleaner industrial processes, in which fewer raw materials are consumed and less pollution is emitted. The cost of such initiatives is usually borne by the end user, the consumer. It is rare that new technology results in a cost reduction for consumers.

However, the most sustainable solution is for the population of the world to consume less. This would lead to industries producing less and thus reducing the pollution associated with such industrial activity.
