IELTS Essay | recycling domestic waste

Waste management policies and practices in relation to domestic waste have developed rapidly in recent years; however, much of the overall success of such recycling initiatives relies heavily on participation by the public. The best option to ensure full cooperation is through the introduction of relevant legislation making it compulsory for households to recycle certain items.

Recycling is no longer a new concept. The public have been informed and encouraged to participate in recycling much of their household waste, and yet recycling potential has not yet been fully achieved. In conjunction with the need to reduce the amount of household waste which passes to landfill sites for destruction, there is also the need to avoid wasting natural resources unnecessarily. Many household items such as paper, glass and aluminum cans can be successfully recycled and reduce the need for the extraction of new natural resources.

However, additional measures are required in order to ensure that the public fully supports recycling programs and initiatives. For example, Recycling of end of life electrical and electronic waste, or e-waste, by households could yield an even larger supply of recycled resources from items such as TVs, computers, and the number one e-waste item – cellular phones. With increasing dependency on the latest and fastest technology, it is essential that governments initiate relevant and adequate legislation to ensure the population complies with the need to dispose of such items and other domestic waste in the safest, most effective and useful manner.

Legislation is, by far, the easiest and quickest method to achieve this, as demonstrated in other spheres of life such as fines for traffic offences and other measures aimed at encouraging corrective behavior of the public. Legislative measures are the next logical and supportive step, following decades of education and encouragement to voluntarily adopt more environmentally conscious consumption and waste disposal habits.
