Essay Answer | Changing Career and Place of Residence Several Times in Life

While it is true that the need to constantly update skills and in some cases retrain for an alternative career has become more common nowadays, along with freer movement of the world’s population, it cannot simply be classed as something positive or negative. It is a simply a direct result of globalization of labor markets and the evolving global culture which is no longer country or region specific.

In recent years, the advent of many new types of work which involve thinking and creative skills and technology has opened the doors to a tsunami of change, not only in the way in which people work but also from where. Many jobs can now be performed by people who live in other countries and many more jobs are done by mobile workers who no longer have physical ties to an office or factory. This general mobility associated with the world of work naturally has consequences which we can now begin to appreciate.

For example, a computer programmer who wishes to live in another country other than his own can now move freely without the absolute necessity to obtain work within the country where he lives. With such a mobile workforce, the possibility of being a resident of various countries during a lifetime is obviously much greater, especially in regions such as Europe where there is free movement between residents of member countries.

As a result, the fast paced change of technology-based work has already established an alternative culture to the traditional job for life expectation which was normal only a generation ago. Nowadays, people can expect to work for several different companies and possibly in various fields throughout their working life. We have already seen the demise of many traditional jobs and it is likely that some current jobs will no longer exist in the next few decades.

These changes or developments in the way we work and live are neither positive nor negative developments, it is simply progress and the important thing to consider is that there will very likely be further changes which impact the world population as we come together even more with a common culture and new work practices in the future.
